Hirafu Matsuri - August 19th, 2017

Hirafu Matsuri - August 19th, 2017

The beautiful Niseko summer culminates next week with the Hirafu Matsuri — one of the most eagerly anticipated events of 2017 — offering a wide array of live events, music, food stalls, and competitions!

This year’s food marché consists of over 35+ local eateries and culinary vendors, offering a taste of Niseko lavished with fresh, in-season local produce — and the traditional Hirafu marquee will be raised to ensure worry-free fun times are had by all, come rain or shine.

Sun Sports Kutchan is located directly opposite AYA Niseko, providing a wonderful venue for both locals and tourists to mingle under the vast Hokkaido sky. The kids area will keep your little ones busy while adults can sit back and enjoy the friendly festival atmosphere and take in inspiring views of Mt. Yotei.

Traditional Japanese bon dance and Mochi-nage (rice cake throwing) with some big prizes will continue to entertain the crowds into the night, and the festival finale will showcase a stirring taiko drumming performance against a spectacular backdrop of fireworks on the starry sky.

Let's hope for beautiful weather!

Hokkaido Fruit Picking

Hokkaido has almost a quarter of Japan's arable land, and is often seen as the country's food basket. As a result, a huge volume of fruits and vegetables are farmed in Hokkaido — a region renowned for the amazing abundance and incredible flavour of its produce.

Thanks to its wide-spreading farmland and ever-increasing popularity both with locals and domestic and international travelers, it's easy to find road-side stalls selling outstanding fresh fruit and vegetables, and the quality of both market and supermarket sold produce is held at an extremely high standard.

Cherries Picking 6

Despite having convenient access to such high-quality produce, it is still difficult to beat the crisp and juicy flavour of freshly picked fruit in the midday sun — and fruit picking remains one of the most popular summer past-times in the region.

Hokkaido has a huge number of fruit fields, farms, and orchards where visitors can pay to pick and enjoy their own fresh fruit. Unlike many fruit picking fields found in other countries, the Japanese tradition leans more towards an all-you-can-eat buffet of fresh fruit — picking tasty treats directly from the vine, stem, or tree, and eating them on the spot.

Cherries Picking 25

Yoichi and Niki are only around an hour's drive from Niseko, and have fields dedicated to a wide variety of fruit including plums, strawberries, peaches, blueberries, grapes, and much more. Despite the hugely varied offerings available throughout the year, the standout favourites are always the exceptional cherries and apples.

Cherries Picking 13

We were lucky enough to visit Niki's Cherry Mountain in the peak of the cherry season — which usually takes place between the months of June and August — and are very much looking forward to the upcoming Apple season, due to arrive towards the end of the month.

Cherries Picking 8

For around a thousand yen per person, you can enjoy hours of fruit picking — sampling some of the finest and freshest produce Hokkaido has to offer, while basking in the warm sun and cool breeze.

For those who fill up while picking, but still want to taste more of the region's tasty fruit, there are also options to take home punnets of uneaten fruit for use in pies, jams, and freshly-squeezed juices; or to buy delicious fruit desserts, dishes, and conserves directly from the orchard and fruit field farmers themselves.

Grand Hirafu Summer Gondola

On Saturday, the Grand Hirafu Summer Gondola began operation for 2017 green season! Located just a short walk away from Hotel Alpen and the Hirafu Welcome Center, the summer gondola utilises the same lines used by the Ace Quad Lift in the winter to carry visitors upwards into the Niseko Annupuri mountain range.

Riders of the gondola can enjoy stunning views from inside of their cabins — which look out over thick forests and steep hillside trails. After ascending over 500m in altitude, guests are greeted at the gondola station by even more dazzling panoramas of nearby towns and the surrounding mountains, including the ever-recognisable Mt. Yotei.

Niseko Siesta2

There are several fantastic hiking options available from the gondola station for those who want to explore the mountain for themselves, including the summit trail, which begins at 820m altitude and winds up the remainder of Mt. Annupuri’s face to its peak. Another favourite is the Kagami-numa trail, which descends along winding roads and half-hidden paths towards a lake whose “mirrored” surface clearly reflects the surrounding landscape and sky on a perfectly calm day.

For those looking for a more restful excursion, enjoy relaxing in one of the many Niseko Siesta lounge chairs located by the Grand Hirafu Thermometer, or find out more about Grand Hirafu and its inhabiting flora and fauna at the Ecol Ecology Center, located in the Ace Hill building. Food and drink is available, and Ace Hill provides an excellent place to take a break or take cover if the weather turns.

New Lifts 3

With downhill mountain biking becoming more and more popular in recent years, many riders take to the famous winter slopes for a new perspective in the green season. Local providers like Rhythm Cycles provide bike rental services for visitors to the area, and each summer gondola car is fully equipped with fixtures that allow it to carry bikes on the back, making repeat runs a quick, easy, and immensely exhilarating experience.
