Sapporo Snow Festival — February, 2018
The Sapporo Snow Festival, one of Japan’s largest and most well-known winter events makes its annual return this February.
Taking place from February 1st - February 12th, the festival will transform the heart of Sapporo into an incredible display of snow, ice, and artistic ingenuity. The 69th Sapporo Snow Festival – or ‘Yuki Matsuri’ – will be spread across three sites within the middle of the city; Odori, Susukino, and Tsudome.
Odori consists of over 1.5km of tree-lined public parks criss-crossed with bustling streets, and covers almost 80,000 sqm – hosting a huge variety of snow and ice sculptures created by local and international talent.
The festival has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1950, when the annual tradition began with local students creating 6 snow sculptures in Odori Park. Now internationally renowned and constantly growing in breadth and popularity, Odori Park regularly hosts over 400 sculptures across its sites; as well as the 2 million people who visit every year to enjoy this unique Hokkaido experience.
Although the size and scope of the snow and ice sculptures varies greatly, the sheer scale of many of the bigger offerings guaranteed to surprise and delight. In recent years, blockbuster movies like ‘Star Wars’ and popular animation series like ‘Dragon Ball’ have taken centre stage; gargantuan recreations of action scenes and recognisable protagonists with intricate details carved and contoured meticulously in the snow.
The best time to view the sculptures is after dark, when many of the sculptures and statues are illuminated with colourful lights and effects – and some with incredible moving projections – bringing them to life in dazzling fashion. Visitors are always advised to wear sufficiently warm clothing, such as heavy winter jackets and thick gloves, as it can become bitterly cold in the evenings.
In addition to the frosty displays created by Sapporo citizens & international contributors, there will also be a highly eclectic range of range of international food and drinks stalls, live extreme snow sports events, as well as entertaining performances from various musical and theatrical artists throughout the festival.
A truly unique and unmissable experience, the Sapporo Snow Festival makes the perfect day trip for guests staying in Niseko. Located just 2.5hrs from our doors, transportation to Hokkaido’s biggest event is simple, with many coach companies offering round-trip tours, and private transfers available direct to the city.
